RATIO FORMULA
A ratio compares two or more quantities. It shows how much of one quantity exists compared with another.
For example, the ratio 2:3 means that for every 2 units of the first quantity, there are 3 units of the second quantity.
Ratios can be simplified by dividing all parts by their greatest common divisor.
EXAMPLE
Suppose there are 12 apples and 18 oranges. The ratio is:
12:18
The greatest common divisor of 12 and 18 is 6. Dividing both numbers by 6 gives:
2:3
Therefore, the simplified ratio of apples to oranges is 2:3.
EQUIVALENT RATIOS
Equivalent ratios have the same relationship between their quantities.
For example:
2:3 = 4:6 = 6:9 = 8:12
You can create equivalent ratios by multiplying or dividing both parts of a ratio by the same non-zero number.
PROPORTIONS
A proportion states that two ratios are equal.
For example:
2:3 = 8:12
Cross multiplication can be used to solve for a missing value in a proportion.
REAL-WORLD USES
Ratios are commonly used in cooking recipes, maps, construction, finance, mathematics, chemistry, sports statistics and everyday comparisons.
They are especially useful when quantities need to be scaled while maintaining the same relationship.
IMPORTANT
Both parts of a ratio must be multiplied or divided by the same non-zero number when creating an equivalent ratio.
A ratio cannot be simplified by changing only one of its values.
Ratios can contain whole numbers, decimals or other numerical values, although whole-number ratios are often easier to interpret.
FAQ
A ratio compares two or more quantities and describes their relative relationship.
Divide all parts of the ratio by their greatest common divisor.
The greatest common divisor is 6, so 12:18 simplifies to 2:3.
Equivalent ratios represent the same relationship even though their numbers are different.
Yes. Decimal ratios can be converted to equivalent whole-number ratios when appropriate.
A proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal.
