UNDERSTAND PERCENTAGES
A percentage is a number expressed as a fraction of 100. For example, 25% means 25 out of 100.
Percentages are commonly used for discounts, increases, decreases, statistics, grades, finance and everyday calculations.
COMMON CALCULATIONS
Percentage of a number: Find a specific percentage of any number.
Percentage of a total: Find what percentage one number represents compared with another.
Percentage increase: Find how much a value has increased as a percentage.
Percentage decrease: Find how much a value has decreased as a percentage.
Discount: Calculate the discount amount and final price.
Percentage difference: Compare two values using their average as the reference.
FORMULAS
Percentage of a number: Percentage × Number ÷ 100
What percent is X of Y: X ÷ Y × 100
Percentage change: (New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value × 100
Discount amount: Original Price × Discount Percentage ÷ 100
Final price: Original Price − Discount Amount
EXAMPLES
20% of 500 = 100
25 is 50% of 50
Increasing 200 to 250 is a 25% increase.
Reducing 500 to 400 is a 20% decrease.
A 10% discount on Rs 1,000 is Rs 100, making the final price Rs 900.
REAL-WORLD USE
Percentages are used in shopping discounts, business profits, tax calculations, exam scores, statistics and financial planning.
They are also useful for comparing changes in prices, sales, population, performance and other numerical measurements.
IMPORTANT
Percentage calculations depend on the reference value being used. For example, a 20% increase and a 20% decrease do not always return you to the original value.
When calculating a percentage change, the original value is normally used as the reference.
Always check whether the calculation requires a percentage of a number, percentage change, percentage difference or discount.
